A remembrance of a hockey showdown

The Fifield brothers were the front line, Stewart, John and Ollie. Hugh was on defense with Jim Albert and I minded the nets with my strapped-on old telephone books for pads. The brothers would not wear gloves. Ten below and no gloves. I suggested they cut out the palms but nope, no gloves. Hugh smoked a corncob pipe while he played. We took on the Concord Blackhawks at White Park. They beat us 9-7. Bad boy Phonze bumped into Hugh, who said “Watch it.” The Phonze took one look at Hugh and skated to the other side of the rink. Big Red Brochu stole the puck from Jim Albert, came around in back of the net, and before I could flash the old pads he tucked it into the far corner, chuckling to himself.

We had a good time.
