August events at Village mark 250 years of Shakerism in America

In early August, Canterbury Shaker Village will kick off a year-long celebration, Commemorating 250 Years: Shakerism in America, which will include many free special events and exhibits that honor the Shaker legacy.

Events are free unless otherwise noted, and you can book a spot online at shakers.org.

  • Special Dedication Ceremony: 2024 Shaker Design First-Class stamps on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 10 am at the post office in the Village’s 1831 Trustees building. Stamps will be available for sale.
  • Mother Ann’s Day on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 2 pm with cake, refreshments, and traditional live music in the Music on the Green series with Liz and Dan Faiella at 4.
  • Shaker Legacy, Shaker Memories with Darryl Thompson on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 2:30 pm. Darryl is a longtime tour guide who was raised at the village. (For the record, Aug. 6 also marks 250 years since Mother Ann Lee, the founding leader of the Shakers, arrived in America.)
  • Special Tour: Building Union: The Early Years at Canterbury Shaker Village, on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 2 pm with Education Manager Kyle Sandler. Cost is $25.
  • Member’s Preview: “Keeping Faith” Special Exhibition on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 3 pm. Members can join village curators for a talk and tour of an exhibition commemorating the Shakers’ arrival in American in 1774.
     
  • Public opening of “Keeping Faith” exhibition and Seasoned with Grace: a Conversation with June Sprigg Tooley. The exhibit opens on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 1 pm, and June, the author of several books on Shakers, speaks at 2.
