One of the phrases you’ll hear often at Canterbury United Community Church is “Wherever you are on your journey, you are welcome here.” Even though many of us are firmly rooted, and we love our traditions, we recognize that things change, and so do we, and so does our life in God. Honestly, I talk about faith as a journey so much that sometimes I worry it’s an empty cliché, too overused to mean anything real. Am I talking about our human condition or advertising for a day-spa?
But I suspect that the faith journey is meaningful and helpful, especially in today’s materialistic, buy-buy-buy world. Faith journeying has roots in ancient traditions, like the Hebrews wandering in wilderness, and Christians and Buddhists on pilgrimage, and aboriginal Australians on walkabout. People of faith have long recognized the connection between outward travelling and inner growth. Physically and spiritually, we are works in progress, and our faith is likewise dynamic, not static. So at CUCC we encourage growth and surprise in our relationships to God and our relationships with one another.
This summer perhaps you’ll travel to someplace new, hike a new trail, or wander in new territory. Or maybe you’ll return to a precious camp or beach or mountain and see something that surprises you. I hope you’ll consider a trip to our friendly church in the center of Canterbury, whether you’re a life-long Christian who’s been away for a while or you’re simply Jesus-curious. Here you’ll find many faith-travelers, folks who are still growing and exploring the meaning of their belief in Jesus Christ. They’ll welcome you to the journey, to the comfort and challenge of travelling with others, and to sharing who we are and what we’re learning. I hope I’ll meet you under the steeple or the maple tree!
Blessings, Becky
