Slowly, so, so, sooo slowly…. summer has arrived! June must be the most anticipated month, whether you’re a student or a teacher, or a grower, or even a twelve-month commuter. Finally we can shed our coats and sweatshirts, long pants and heavy shoes. Summer means rolling down the windows, rolling up our sleeves, kneeling in a garden and leaping through a sprinkler. Even the most indoorsy folks feel summer’s call to come outside and just enjoy! My mom and dad pushed me outside whenever the weather was nice (all four seasons), even if it meant just bringing my book and reading in the shade. To this day, I still get antsy if I’m inside for very long
In summer, Canterbury United Community Church (CUCC) still gathers in the center for worship at 10, with coffee and conversation at 11:15, but not always under the steeple. When the morning is fine, we might hold our service in camp chairs under that spreading maple by the Parish House. And if it’s not too hot, we may stay out for open fellowship, too! And this makes good theological and ecclesiastical sense- because worshiping outdoors reminds us that one, God isn’t limited to one place (not even a place with a steeple), and two it’s not the building that makes us a church. CUCC is centuries of people and their promises, to care for and nurture one another in body and spirit, to love and serve our neighbors and strangers, and to grow together in faith and understanding.
I hope you’ll visit us this summer- for worship or for coffee hour, or just stop by the Parish House for a chat. You’ll find a friendly welcome, great music, and rest and inspiration- whether we’re inside or out!
In Peace, Becky
